Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) announcement
Kawa Marae Trust Board is ecstatic to share the news that at the Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) announcement ceremony by MP Shane Jones at Okorihi Marae in Kaikohe last Friday, our application has been successful in securing the PGF grant of up to $313,000.00 towards the renovations of our Marae as a Shovel Ready project.
We thank all those who have been instrumental in assisting us with this application and who will continue to provide project management to complete the Marae renovations. We acknowledge and appreciate the guidance of the Te Taitokerau Provincial Growth Unit staff.
The funding will be used to cover labour and construction costs including building repairs, electrical wiring, plumbing, painting, grounds and landscaping works.
Part of the agreement with the Provincial Growth Fund is to focus on providing employment for our whanau on or off-island and our community on Aotea, Great Barrier Island. In the first instance we encourage expressions of interest to those that have the skills and work experience in building (qualified, labours, apprentices) or landscaping required to complete the renovations to a high level by emailing kawamarae.gbi@gmail.com.
We are also pleased to announce we have secured funding through Auckland Council for two other project streams, both with a focus on local employment of our people :
1) Renovation of the Old Teachers School House
Renovating the old teachers school house which will provide accommodation for those working on projects at the Marae and
2) Establishment of Mara Kai (Social Enterprise)
The establishment of a Mara Kai as a direct response to the impact of Covid 19 pandemic in terms of food security for our whanau. These funds will go towards labour and initial set-up requirements. Hui will be held for whanau in due course to discuss Mara kai and what food sovereignty could look like for us utilising the Maramataka (Maori Calendar).
If you are interested in working or providing skills on either of these projects please register your interest by emailing kawamarae.gbi@gmail.com.
We are looking forward to a really productive time for the Marae in the coming months and into the new year ahead. Lots to look forward to whanau and lots of reasons to come and be involved in what's happening.
